The Kentucky Wildcats football program takes a hit in the transfer portal.
The Kentucky Wildcats football team has recently experienced a significant loss in their defensive lineup. Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Kendrick Gilbert has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, as confirmed by Hayes Fawcett. Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 275 pounds, Gilbert leaves Kentucky with three years of eligibility remaining, which opens up a scholarship spot for the team. Originally committed to Purdue, he signed with Kentucky on National Signing Day.
A four-star recruit from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Gilbert was ranked as the No. 2 player in Indiana and the No. 12 defensive lineman nationally by Rivals, receiving offers from major programs including LSU and Iowa. During the 2024 season, he appeared in eight games, recording five tackles and one tackle for loss. He also played in two games during his redshirt 2023 season, tallying a tackle in each. Gilbert’s departure provides head coach Mark Stoops and his staff increased flexibility as they continue to refine the team roster using the transfer portal.
This development is part of a broader trend of Wildcats players entering the transfer portal. Defensive lineman Keeshawn Silver, a former five-star recruit, also announced his intention to enter the portal. Silver recorded 26 tackles, one tackle for loss, and one sack in 12 games during the 2024 season. His departure, along with that of other key players, has raised concerns about the team’s defensive depth.
In response to these departures, Kentucky has made efforts to strengthen their defensive line by adding new talent. They secured a commitment from Kameron Olds, a 6’4″, 240-pound edge rusher from Kent State, who was ranked as the 8th best edge rusher in the transfer portal. Olds had an impressive 2024 season, totaling 42 tackles (25 solo), 6 sacks, and 1 interception returned for 13 yards. His addition aims to bolster the Wildcats’ pass-rushing capabilities.
As the Wildcats navigate these roster changes, the coaching staff faces the challenge of rebuilding the defense to maintain competitiveness in the SEC. The team’s ability to effectively utilize the transfer portal and develop incoming talent will be crucial in addressing the gaps left by departing players.
