Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Jacob Copeland, who voiced his frustration with the team after being released last summer, is now heading to the Canadian Football League.
The Edmonton Elks announced last week that they’ve signed Copeland, giving him a fresh opportunity to revive his football career.
Copeland was waived on August 26th after limited participation in practices and preseason games with the Steelers. Following his release, he expressed disappointment over not being given a fair shot to prove himself.
He saw only ten snaps against the Houston Texans and three against the Detroit Lions, with no special teams action. He was targeted once during the preseason and made the catch. Copeland felt the lack of opportunities hindered his ability to showcase his talent.
“I didn’t get a chance to showcase (in the) preseason. No opportunity,” he said.
A former standout at Florida and Maryland, Copeland entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He had brief stints with the Titans, Vikings, Chiefs, and Steelers, spending part of the 2023 season on Pittsburgh’s practice squad.
After going unsigned during the 2024 season, Copeland now heads to the CFL with a chance to get back on the field and work toward an NFL return.
