Only 15 NFL teams have opted to include natural grass in their stadiums, with many others reluctant to take on the additional costs—even though the benefits for player health are clear. According to The Buffalo News, installing natural grass can range from $300,000 to $500,000, with maintenance and infrastructure expenses adding up to over $1 million annually. That’s a major financial commitment, especially considering that turf is a cheaper alternative.
Despite the higher cost, the Buffalo Bills have chosen to install natural grass in their new stadium. The organization believes that prioritizing player safety will pay off, especially during the postseason. Although the overall cost of the stadium in Orchard Park has surpassed initial projections—with the NFL stepping in to help—the Bills see this as a worthwhile investment.
To handle the project, the team hired SCG Fields, a company known for working with teams like the Steelers, Bears, and Broncos. John Polka, the Bills’ vice president of stadium development, highlighted the importance of giving the field a full growing season before the first game, noting the complexity involved in constructing a quality grass surface.
While many NFL teams talk about prioritizing player safety, few back it up with action. The Bills, under the ownership of the Pegula family, seem to be following through on that commitment as construction of their new stadium continues.
