It’s well known that Mets owner Steve Cohen isn’t shy about making bold moves to acquire top talent. After signing Juan Soto to the largest contract in sports history, expectations for a serious World Series run are high in New York. However, with injuries and inconsistent performances plaguing key players, Cohen may need to make another splash to keep the Mets on track.
One area of concern has been the outfield, which has posed significant challenges early in the season. According to one analyst, a potential trade could give the Mets the boost they need — adding a powerful outfield bat to stabilize the lineup and elevate the team’s championship hopes.
In a recent Bleacher Report article, Kerry Miller identified Orioles outfielder Tyler O’Neill as a potential trade target for the Mets. While much depends on how competitive teams like Baltimore and San Francisco are as the season unfolds, Miller pointed out that both clubs have multiple outfielders set to hit free agency after the season — making them possible trade partners.
“Robert is the big name expected to be on the move,” Miller wrote, “but the Orioles and Giants also have several outfielders who could be available.” O’Neill, with his power potential and expiring contract, could offer the Mets a valuable midseason upgrade if Baltimore is willing to deal.
Tyler O’Neill has suited up for three teams over his eight-year MLB career. After spending his first six seasons with the Cardinals, the 29-year-old played last year with the Red Sox before signing a three-year, $49.5 million deal with the Orioles. A two-time Gold Glove winner, O’Neill has been a steady contributor throughout his career, posting a 13.2 bWAR and an above-average slash line of .247/.323/.470 with a .793 OPS. He’s also showcased legitimate power, with 111 home runs to his name.
Given the Mets’ recent offensive struggles, O’Neill could provide a much-needed spark in their lineup, serving as a strong complement to Juan Soto in the outfield. With an opt-out clause after this season, Baltimore may consider moving O’Neill at the deadline to capitalize on his value before potentially losing him in free agency.
