The former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back and returner has passed away.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Lupe Sanchez has died at the age of 63, according to a Facebook post from his friend Keith Korsgarden.

“With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Lupe Sanchez,” Korsgarden wrote. “He was a cherished friend to many, including all of us at the restaurant, and a true example of kindness, resilience, and strength.”

Sanchez was born in Visalia, California, to Mexican immigrant parents. He stayed close to home for college, attending UCLA, where he had a standout football career. Between 1979 and 1983, Sanchez tallied 13 interceptions, placing him fifth all-time in UCLA history.

He was selected in the second round of the 1984 NFL Supplemental Draft but didn’t stick with his original team. Instead, he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played from 1986 to 1988. During his three seasons in Pittsburgh, Sanchez recorded four interceptions — including one returned for a touchdown — and made nine starts. He also contributed as a return specialist, totaling 778 return yards on 35 attempts.

After his NFL tenure, Sanchez continued his football career in the USFL with the Arizona Wranglers and Orlando Renegad.
