Just In: Another Hokies’ men’s basketball player announces he’s coming back for 2025-26.

Virginia Tech Basketball: Hokies guard Jaden Schutt makes huge announcement about his future

As the college basketball transfer portal continues to shake up rosters nationwide, Virginia Tech is quietly starting to solidify its foundation for the 2025-26 season. After several departures, head coach Mike Young received a significant boost Monday afternoon as guard Jaden Schutt announced his decision to return to the Hokies for another season.

Schutt, a former Duke transfer, made the announcement on his Instagram page, confirming he will run it back with Virginia Tech after an up-and-down debut season in Blacksburg. The Illinois native averaged 7.7 points per game, shooting 37% from the field and 36% from beyond the arc — showcasing the shooting ability that made him a top recruit out of high school.

Although injuries and illness limited his impact late in the season, Schutt was often one of the team’s most reliable perimeter threats when healthy. His decision to return not only stabilizes the backcourt but also gives Mike Young a valuable veteran presence with experience in both the ACC and SEC.

Schutt’s return comes on the heels of freshmen Ben Hammond and Tyler Johnson announcing their own plans to stay with the Hokies. The trio played a significant role in the backcourt following New Year’s, with Schutt and Hammond starting the majority of games during the second half of the season. Their chemistry and continuity will be vital to Tech’s offensive rhythm next year.

Meanwhile, the Hokies have seen a wave of departures this spring, with six players entering the transfer portal. In response, Young wasted no time replenishing the roster by landing West Virginia transfer Amani Hansberry, a strong frontcourt addition expected to bring physicality and rebounding to the team.

Schutt’s return also signals that Virginia Tech still has a competitive core capable of building on last season’s performance. While consistency was an issue at times, the guard showed flashes of elite shooting and improved defensive awareness — elements the Hokies will look to maximize next season.

As the picture for next season becomes clearer, all eyes now turn to Tobi Lawal, who has yet to declare whether he’ll remain with the team or enter the transfer portal. Lawal’s decision could be pivotal in shaping the Hokies’ frontcourt, particularly alongside Hansberry and rising big men on the roster.

For now, the return of Jaden Schutt is a win for Virginia Tech — both on the floor and in the locker room. With a growing nucleus of young talent and experienced transfers, Mike Young appears to be constructing a team ready to compete in the ACC once again.
