Huge Boost: Virginia Tech Lands Two Transfers, Including Former 4-Star Guard

The Hokies are in the mix for a talented St. John’s guard.

A month into the men’s basketball transfer portal window, Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young has secured commitments from two transfers: Amani Hansberry from West Virginia and Izaiah Pasha from Delaware.

These additions address key needs for the Hokies in both the frontcourt and backcourt. Hansberry, in particular, could play an even more vital role if Tobi Lawal—currently testing the NBA Draft waters—opts to stay in the draft. Lawal has maintained his college eligibility and indicated that if he returns to school, he would play at Virginia Tech.

Despite these additions, Young still has several roster needs to fill through the portal. One potential target is St. John’s transfer Simeon Wilcher, who has narrowed his choices to seven schools, with Virginia Tech among them, per a college basketball insider.

Virginia Tech is actively pursuing Wilcher to bolster their backcourt, which currently includes sophomore Ben Hammond and newcomer Pasha. According to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, the Hokies are in Wilcher’s final seven schools, along with Pittsburgh, BYU, Maryland, Texas, Oregon, and Ole Miss.

Wilcher played last season under Rick Pitino at St. John’s, where he averaged 8 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game, shooting 41% from the field in about 25 minutes per night. He posted 13 points in the Red Storm’s first-round NCAA Tournament win over Omaha.

A former four-star recruit per 247Sports, the 6-foot-4 New Jersey native is a polished ball handler with strong court vision—qualities Virginia Tech is looking for in a point guard. He would be a valuable addition if the Hokies are able to land him.
