The Chicago Cubs have recently made several strategic changes to their bullpen, aiming to address performance issues and strengthen their pitching staff.
One notable move involved recalling left-handed pitcher Tom Cosgrove from Triple-A Iowa and optioning right-hander Ethan Roberts to the minors. Cosgrove, acquired from the San Diego Padres, had a strong performance in 2023 but struggled in 2024. In his brief stint with Triple-A Iowa, Cosgrove pitched four innings over three games, allowing no runs, three hits, one walk, and striking out seven.
This decision was influenced by the lefty-heavy lineup of the Philadelphia Phillies and the unavailability of fellow lefty Drew Pomeranz, who had already pitched in the first two games of the series. Roberts, despite his potential, had a tough outing on Saturday, surrendering four runs while throwing 33 pitches. This strategic move aims to strengthen the Cubs’ bullpen with more left-handed pitching.

Additionally, the Cubs acquired veteran left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations. Pomeranz, 36, last pitched in the major leagues in 2021 and had recently signed a minor league contract with the Mariners on March 27. During his stint with Triple-A Tacoma, he recorded a 0-1 record with a 4.66 ERA and two saves over nine appearances. He will now report to the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate in Iowa.
Pomeranz has played for several teams, including the Rockies, Athletics, Padres, Red Sox, Giants, and Brewers. Notably, he was an All-Star in 2016 and produced a strong 2.39 ERA for the Brewers in 2019 under current Cubs manager Craig Counsell. Pomeranz missed the 2022 and 2023 seasons due to elbow surgeries. er their pitching staff and improve performance in upcoming games.
