Similar to the winter, the spring transfer portal proved highly beneficial for Virginia Tech football under the guidance of coach Brent Pry. Although there were specific needs, the team managed to retain a significant portion of its roster during the winter, and the losses in the spring were primarily depth players. Consequently, only a handful of new players were required to reach the maximum scholarship limit of 85.
Following the Hokies’ Spring Game, backup quarterback Dylan Wittke entered the transfer portal, swiftly followed by Pry’s announcement that Pop Watson had secured the backup position to Kyron Drones after spring practices. While Wittke committed to Minnesota for the upcoming 2024 season, Pry successfully filled the void by recruiting experienced quarterback Collin Schlee from UCLA, who hails from Maryland.
In addition to Schlee, there were other noteworthy additions to the team, marking the conclusion of Virginia Tech’s activity in the portal. Now, it’s time to assess the overall success of Pry’s efforts.
Regarding the grade for the 2024 Spring transfer portal:
Schlee’s commitment in late April significantly bolstered the team, especially in the quarterback department where he will compete with Watson for the backup position behind Drones. This battle promises to be one of the highlights to watch over the summer, given the importance of the QB2 role demonstrated last season when Grant Wells was injured against Purdue in Week 2.
During the winter portal, Pry reinforced the defensive line by recruiting Aeneas Peebles from Duke, Kelvin Gilliam from Oklahoma, and Kemari Copeland from Iowa Western Community College, alongside returning players Antwaun Powell-Ryland and Josh Fuga. Despite this, Pry continued to enhance the group’s depth and talent by securing a commitment from Alabama transfer Khurtiss Perry.
Most recently, Miami transfer Kaleb Spencer, known for his contributions on special teams last season, committed to Virginia Tech. Spencer’s addition offers flexibility in the secondary for defensive coordinator Chris Marve, complementing the existing talent and younger prospects. While his precise role is yet to be determined, Spencer brings three years of eligibility into the 2024 season.
Overall, Pry’s management of the transfer portal was once again commendable, achieving both retention and significant depth additions. Notable commitments from players like Montavious Cunningham on the offensive line and Sam Brumfield at linebacker, secured during the winter, further contribute to the team’s strength. Despite differing opinions, it’s clear that Pry navigated the portal effectively, resulting in another successful season for Virginia Tech.
