The Rangers made an announcement today regarding their roster changes, revealing that they’ve designated right-hander Shaun Anderson for assignment. In his place, they’ve selected right-hander Gerson Garabito from the minors, who is set to make his major league debut by starting today’s game against the Twins.
Anderson joined the team earlier this month after signing a minor league deal in April. Drafted in the third round by the Red Sox in 2016, Anderson’s major league debut with San Francisco in 2019 showed mixed results, with a 5.44 ERA and 4.77 FIP in 96 innings across 28 appearances, including 16 starts.
Since then, he struggled to secure significant playing time, making only 35 appearances across five different organizations between 2020 and 2022, with less than stellar stats—a 6.85 ERA and 5.57 FIP during that period.
In 2023, Anderson sought opportunities overseas, signing with the Korea Baseball Organization’s KIA Tigers. He performed decently there, posting a 3.76 ERA in 14 appearances as a starter. Upon returning to the U.S. late in the season with the Phillies on a minor league deal, his performance declined, allowing 28 runs in 11 starts for the Triple-A affiliate.
Despite his struggles, the Rangers signed Anderson to a minor league deal in April, but his stint with the team was brief, making only two appearances before being designated for assignment. On the other hand, Garabito, a 28-year-old right-hander, has been called up from the minors.
He began his professional career with the Royals in 2013, then moved through various leagues, including Nicaragua, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic, before returning to the U.S. with the Rangers this season.
Garabito showcased promising form in seven appearances across Double-A and Triple-A, boasting a 2.05 ERA and an impressive 30.8% strikeout rate. The Rangers, facing rotation challenges due to injuries, have decided to give him his first opportunity in the majors, with his debut anticipated against the Twins.
