Texas Tech basketball head coach Grant McCasland aims to capitalize on the successes of the 2023 season. Securing high-quality talent for the team becomes paramount, and the Red Raiders have recently made a significant acquisition.
According to TTU Athletics, JT Toppin, formerly of New Mexico, will be joining the Red Raiders for the 2024 season.
Toppin’s commitment is anticipated to be crucial for McCasland and the team. Standing at 6-foot-9 with a wingspan exceeding seven feet, Toppin demonstrated his potential during his freshman year at New Mexico, averaging 12.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game.
He led the Mountain West in various statistical categories, including total rebounds, blocks, offensive rebounds, and shooting percentage.
Toppin possesses the talent that could have led him to the NBA this season, but he has chosen to enhance his draft prospects for 2025 while playing in Lubbock.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech maintains a strong roster. Returning players include senior guards Chance McMillian and Kerwin Walton, senior forward Devin Cambridge, junior guard Darrion Williams, and sophomore forward Eemeli Yalaho from last season’s successful 23-11 squad.
With Toppin’s addition, the Red Raiders have bolstered their lineup with four transfer players, including guard Kevin Overton from Drake, guard Elijah Hawkins from Minnesota, and center Federiko Federiko from Pitt.
In addition to these transfers, the freshman class adds further promise, featuring three-star forward Leon Horner and four-star point guard Christian Anderson. This collective talent suggests that the Red Raiders are on the path to building a formidable contender.
