Hurricanes sign another devoted fast rising star, $775,000 two-way contract

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed forward Josiah Slavin to a two-year, two-way contract, as announced by general manager Eric Tulsky on Sunday. The deal, running through the 2025-26 season, features an average annual value (AAV) of $775,000, with a minor-league salary of $150,000. Of this, $450,000 is guaranteed for Slavin.

This marks Slavin’s first NHL contract in two seasons, having previously been under an American Hockey League contract with the Toronto Marlies.

Tulsky praised Slavin, describing him as a intelligent, two-way player with good size who competes hard and brings high character, noting his NHL experience. The Hurricanes are excited to integrate him into their organization.

Originally from Erie, Colorado, Slavin was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the seventh round of the 2018 NHL Draft. Following two NCAA seasons at Colorado College, he signed his entry-level contract with the Blackhawks in March 2021, which carried a two-year term with a $925,000 cap hit.

After a brief stint with the Blackhawks, Slavin was traded to the Anaheim Ducks in February 2023, and later joined the Toronto Marlies. During his time with the Marlies, he played consistently in a depth role, appearing in 70 games and tallying 10 goals and 14 assists with a +4 plus/minus rating. He also participated in all three Calder Cup Playoff games for Toronto.

In his NHL career spanning 15 games, Slavin has recorded one assist, achieved during the 2021-22 season. His AHL tenure includes 201 appearances with 38 goals and 43 assists, along with one assist in six playoff games.

Josiah Slavin will now join his older brother, Jaccob, on the Hurricanes’ roster. This continues a tradition for the Hurricanes, who previously featured brothers Eric and Jordan Staal in their lineup for several seasons.
