Former Rutgers forward Oskar Palmquist has decided to return to his native Sweden to pursue a professional basketball career. Borås Basket, a prominent team in the Svenska Basketligan (Swedish Basketball League), announced his signing last Monday for the upcoming season. Palmquist expressed his excitement about joining Borås, a team he has supported since childhood, and playing in front of their fans at Boråshallen.
Palmquist’s decision to sign with Borås marks a homecoming after considering various options following his college career. Despite not seeing much playing time during his tenure at Rutgers, largely due to injuries and limited opportunities, Palmquist was known for his positive presence in the Knights’ locker room. His decision to forgo his final season of college eligibility demonstrates his readiness to embark on a professional career in Sweden.
In addition to Palmquist, his former Rutgers teammate Andre Hyatt has also secured a professional contract overseas, joining Belgium’s Kangoeroes Basket Mechelen.
A noteworthy piece of Borås Basket’s history includes the 1999-2000 season when they were briefly named Magic M7 Borås, a tribute to Magic Johnson who was a minority owner at the time. At the age of 40, Magic Johnson suited up for five games, and remarkably, Borås went undefeated during that period.
