The influence of new Texas Longhorns head coach Jim Schlossnagle and his team reverberated throughout Texas on Thursday with the commitment of Kayson Cunningham, the top prospect in the state’s 2025 class, from San Antonio Johnson High School.
Standing at 5’10” and weighing 178 pounds, Cunningham had previously committed to Texas Tech Red Raiders over two years ago, but recently reopened his recruitment. Known for his impressive hitting skills, Cunningham boasts a career batting average of .445 and exhibits exceptional plate discipline, evidenced by his significantly higher walk-to-strikeout ratio. He also showcases elite speed and infield velocity, reaching speeds up to 92 mph.

Cunningham possesses a strong and compact physique, running the sixty-yard dash in 6.54 seconds. As a primary middle infielder, he demonstrates highly athletic movements and advanced defensive skills, maintaining balance and exhibiting soft hands with precise throws. At the plate, he hits from a slightly open stance, showing quick hands and generating powerful contact to all parts of the field.
With Cunningham emerging as one of the standout prospects in his class, Coach Schlossnagle and assistant Troy Tulowitzki face the challenge of securing his commitment to the University of Texas, known as the Forty Acres, in the coming summer.
