Drones’ ‘leap of faith’ has Hokies set up for success.
Kyron Drones’ decision to leave Baylor for Virginia Tech was more than just a leap of faith.
At the time, Drones was a redshirt sophomore with only 23 college passes under his belt and faced the challenge of competing against a seasoned three-year Division I starter, Grant Wells. Despite the uncertainty, Drones was drawn to the opportunity to contribute to a team coming off a disappointing season with only three wins.
“I wasn’t really second-guessing my decision,” Drones said. “I made a similar choice when I went to Baylor, which had just won two games. It was another leap of faith. I knew Virginia Tech was in a rebuilding phase, and I wanted to be a part of that. It’s easier to join a team that’s already winning and make a few contributions, but joining a rebuilding team gives you the chance to be a part of something special and earn recognition as the team improves. I’ve done it before, so I wasn’t afraid to do it again.”
Despite stepping into the starting role midway through the season, Drones revitalized the Tech offense, tailoring it to his dual-threat abilities. His quiet demeanor did not hinder his growth as a leader.
“Some guys are harder to get to know,” said Tech head coach Brent Pry. “Kyron is a bit reserved, but he earned my respect through his practice habits and approach. He’s also earned the respect of his teammates. He’s become more open and developed strong relationships, particularly with Ali and the wide receivers. This opportunity was well-deserved and will help him grow as a quarterback.”
Offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen made Drones a top priority, traveling to Waco, Texas, on the first day of the transfer portal window to recruit him.
Now, with nearly the entire offense returning to support Drones, the Hokies’ vision for the season is clear.
“Everyone who came back did so for a reason,” Drones said. “If we’re going to achieve something special, this is the year to do it. I’m excited to get out there for week one and have a great season.”
