On Tuesday, the Detroit Tigers traded left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin to the Texas Rangers in advance of the MLB trade deadline.
In return, the Rangers sent right-handed pitching prospects Joseph Montalvo and Chase Lee to the Tigers.
Chafin, 34, joins the reigning World Series champions as they pursue a playoff spot. Although the Rangers are currently three games under .500, they are only 3.5 games behind the American League West leaders.
This season, Chafin has posted a 3.16 ERA in 41 relief appearances for the Tigers, with a 3-2 record and one save from four opportunities. He has struck out 50 batters and walked 16 in 37 innings.
Over an 11-year MLB career with five different teams, Chafin has a 3.39 ERA, a 20-26 record, and 20 saves, along with 535 strikeouts in 489 innings.
Montalvo, 22, has a 4-2 record with a 2.44 ERA in 13 starts at the High-A level this season. Lee, 25, has spent the majority of the past three seasons at Triple-A Round Rock and is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 11 games (one start) across two levels this year.
To make space for Chafin on their 40-man roster, the Rangers designated right-hander Jonathan Hernandez, 28, for assignment. Hernandez has a 3-1 record with a 5.05 ERA, 26 walks, and 36 strikeouts in 41 innings over 26 appearances (one start) for Texas this season.
