Forward excited for future after re-signing two-year deal with Red Wings
Following his most successful NHL season in 2023-24, Joe Veleno has a lot of growth, both on and off the ice, to consider this summer.
After signing a two-year contract extension with the Detroit Red Wings on July 20, Veleno expressed his desire to achieve more in the upcoming season.
“It’s great to have the contract sorted out,” Veleno recently shared with DetroitRedWings.com. “Going to arbitration is never ideal, so I’m thrilled we reached an agreement. This deal keeps me with Detroit for another two years, and I’m committed to staying here. I can’t see myself playing anywhere else.”
Drafted 30th overall by the Red Wings in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Veleno reached personal bests in goals (12), assists (16), and points (28) over 80 games last season. The 24-year-old forward also demonstrated his versatility by taking on top-six roles and contributing to both special teams when needed by the coaches.

“It’s been a significant boost to our depth and competitiveness all year, having the flexibility to use him both as a winger and a center,” said Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde about Veleno on March 5. “That kind of versatility is incredibly valuable in today’s NHL.”
Veleno feels that his second full season with the Red Wings helped him grow as a player.
“I made progress in terms of statistics and gained experience with new aspects of my role,” Veleno noted. “That experience is invaluable, and I’m thankful for the chances I’ve been given. Ultimately, it’s up to me to make the most of them.”
This self-confidence and awareness have been key to Veleno’s career, and he indicated that his new contract won’t alter his approach.
“While having multi-year contract security is reassuring, it’s time for me to continue pushing forward,” Veleno stated. “I’ll keep working hard, striving to improve as a player, and staying engaged with the community. We have a promising future ahead, and I’m eager to be a part of it, grow as a player, and contribute to the team’s success.”

Veleno enjoyed contributing to Detroit’s push for a Stanley Cup Playoff spot last season and noted that the level of competitiveness in the final stretch was something he hadn’t experienced before in the NHL.
“We remember how close we came and believe we can achieve our goal of making the playoffs,” Veleno remarked. “There was a lot of disappointment in the locker room when the season ended.”
Training in his hometown of Montreal this offseason, Veleno is focused on enhancing every aspect of his game.
“I’ve been working out in the gym and doing some skating,” Veleno said. “As summer progresses, my workouts are getting more intense, both in the gym and on the ice. I’m pleased with my progress so far and also enjoying the nice weather while spending time with family and friends.”
Veleno is eager to meet the Red Wings’ new additions this fall at Training Camp in Traverse City, Mich.
“I’m excited to meet the new team members and catch up with the familiar faces from last year,” Veleno said. “I can’t wait to hit the ice again. There’s a lot of enthusiasm, and I’m sure the team and fans are equally excited. We’re in a great position because we’ve been making progress every year.”
