South Carolina baseball has lost a member of its 2025 recruiting class as in-state stud Peter Mershon decommitted on Tuesday.
South Carolina baseball coach Paul Mainieri and his team have received a lot of positive updates this offseason. The Gamecocks have secured several commitments from high school players, junior colleges, and the transfer portal, and some potential MLB Draft picks have chosen to attend college rather than turn pro early.
Nevertheless, not all the news has been favorable.
On Tuesday, Peter Mershon, a commitment for the class of 2025, announced on social media that he was withdrawing his commitment from South Carolina. Mershon, a catcher/third baseman and a top-100 prospect in the 2025 class, may now attend a different school if he chooses college over the MLB Draft.
A native of South Carolina, Mershon is currently a student at Eastside High School in Greenville and has one more year of high school remaining. Given his high draft potential, he might skip college altogether. His older brother, David, previously played for Mississippi State and was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels this year.
Despite this setback, South Carolina still has a commitment from another catcher for the 2025 class. Earlier this summer, Noah Franklin, a catcher from West Ashley High School, committed to the Gamecocks after initially being committed to Duke before switching to South Carolina following Mark Kingston’s departure.
The Gamecocks also have several infield prospects committed for the 2025 class and multiple highly-regarded infielders for the 2024 class.
While losing a player of Mershon’s caliber is a blow, the Gamecocks have a strong foundation to manage the impact.
The team will start their fall practice season at the end of September.
