The Detroit Lions have signed quarterback Jake Fromm to bolster their depth at a position weakened by Hendon Hooker’s recent concussion.
Lions coach Dan Campbell commented on Monday night, “We believe he can quickly grasp our offense and step in to assist if necessary.”
Detroit was reluctant to enter their preseason game against Kansas City on Saturday with only Jared Goff and Nate Sudfeld available to play.
Jake Fromm, 26, started twice for the New York Giants in 2021 without securing a win. A former Georgia standout, he was drafted by Buffalo in the fifth round in 2020 but was released by Washington three months ago.
Campbell noted, “We needed someone who could operate effectively in the pocket, and he was available. He had a solid workout on Monday, so we’ll see how things progress.”
The Lions were hoping Hooker would gain valuable experience in his second NFL season after recovering from a knee injury that ended his college career.
Hooker was injured in the third quarter of a preseason game against the Giants last week, marking his first appearance in 21 months since a left knee ligament tear during his final college season with the Tennessee Volunteers. He completed 5 of 9 passes for 36 yards and had four carries for 34 yards, including a 16-yard run.
Detroit drafted Hooker in the third round last year, anticipating he wouldn’t play as a rookie but hoping he would eventually become a reliable backup.
The defending NFC North champions extended Goff’s contract with a four-year, $212 million deal in May. They will kick off the regular season at home against the Los Angeles Rams on September 8, aiming to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in the franchise’s history.
