For the fourth time in recent Kansas State football history, the Wildcats’ coaching staff is anticipating a wide receiver with a well-known last name to make a significant impact. We’re referring to Sterling Lockett, a redshirt sophomore who has seen limited action since joining the team but is now poised for a breakthrough. Following in the footsteps of his older brother Tyler, father Kevin, and uncle Aaron, Sterling appears ready to make his mark.
K-State co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Wells noted, “He’s playing with speed and confidence now. He understands his assignments, alignments, technique, and route running better than before. His confidence has grown, and he’s performing at a higher level.” Wells observed that Sterling is now playing closer to his top speed compared to the spring and expressed enthusiasm for seeing him in action this fall.
Sterling began turning heads early in training camp with his impressive speed and athleticism, making notable catches with the first-string offense. During a recent scrimmage, he caught every pass thrown his way, which is no surprise given his rising status on the depth chart. While he isn’t expected to start right away, he is likely to be one of the top six receivers and could also contribute on punt returns.
According to K-State receivers coach Matthew Middleton, “Sterling has shown a new level of consistency. He’s confident in our scheme and in his abilities, knowing how to use his skills effectively, both in getting open and in blocking.” Middleton praised Sterling’s development and overall growth as a player.
K-State fans are eagerly anticipating what Sterling Lockett will bring to the field this season. Even if he takes on a reserve role, comparisons to his renowned family are inevitable. His relatives are among the top five in career receiving yards at K-State, with Tyler Lockett holding numerous school records with 249 catches for 3,710 yards and 29 touchdowns, currently playing for the Seattle Seahawks. Kevin Lockett follows with 3,032 career yards, while Aaron Lockett accumulated 2,400 yards.
The Lockett legacy is well-established, and Sterling is expected to continue this tradition. Tyler once joked about making his stats difficult for his younger brother to surpass, but Sterling is set to make his own mark this season. It’s only a matter of time before his name becomes a prominent fixture in K-State football.
