The Detroit Red Wings are continuing their trend of adding Michigan-born talent by signing left wing Austin Watson to a professional tryout contract, as announced by his agency.
Watson, a 32-year-old native of Ann Arbor, will vie for a spot on the roster during training camp and preseason. Standing 6-4 and weighing 238 pounds, Watson is known for his physical play and fighting ability. Last season, he played 33 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, recording two goals, two assists, and accumulating 93 penalty minutes.
The Red Wings’ bottom six forwards seem to be established with centers Andrew Copp and Tyler Motte, along with wingers Michael Rasmussen, Jonatan Berggren, Christian Fischer, and Joe Veleno. They may be looking for a 13th forward. Prospect Carter Mazur will also compete for a spot but will remain in Grand Rapids if he isn’t a regular in the lineup.
Drafted 18th overall by the Nashville Predators in 2010, Watson has played 515 NHL games, scoring 60 goals, 58 assists, and amassing 705 penalty minutes.Dea
