The Texas Rangers are moving one of their relievers to the injured list and promoting a Triple-A prospect for the fourth time this season.
The Texas Rangers have recalled pitcher Owen White from Triple-A Round Rock ahead of Friday’s game and placed reliever Grant Anderson on the 15-day injured list due to a right ankle contusion, the team announced.
White’s promotion is partly to provide additional support behind Friday’s starter, Gerson Garabito.
The 25-year-old White, ranked as the Rangers’ No. 26 prospect by MLB Pipeline, has been called up to the major league team for the fourth time this season, most recently on Sunday. He has made two relief appearances for the Rangers, giving up six earned runs in one inning. His last appearance was on May 13.
For Round Rock, White has posted a 2-8 record with a 5.55 ERA, including 82 strikeouts and 45 walks in 26 games and 15 starts. He has recently been transitioning to a full-time relief role.
In his most recent outing for the Express on Wednesday, White allowed one hit and one earned run in one inning against Las Vegas, while striking out two and walking one.
Anderson is on the 15-day IL, retroactive to Thursday, after taking a comebacker off his right ankle during the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game against the New York Yankees. He will be eligible to return no earlier than September 20.
Throughout the season, Anderson has alternated between the Rangers and Round Rock, making six separate trips to the major league team. He holds a 0-1 record with one save and an 8.10 ERA in 23 relief appearances for the Rangers, while going 3-0 with a 2.96 ERA in 23 relief outings for the Express.
This transaction keeps the Rangers at the 40-player roster limit, with five players currently on the 60-day IL: Evan Carter, Carson Coleman, Jacob deGrom, Jon Gray, and Cole Winn.
DeGrom is scheduled to make a rehab appearance with Double-A Frisco on Saturday, which could be his final step before activation. Additionally, Max Scherzer, who is on the 15-day IL, is set to make a rehab start on Saturday with the Express in Las Vegas.
