Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer, both multiple-time Cy Young Award winners, are poised to rejoin the Texas Rangers’ starting rotation after completing their rehab assignments, manager Bruce Bochy announced on Sunday.
“Jacob is scheduled to start soon,” Bochy said regarding the two-time Cy Young winner deGrom. “The same applies to Max. Both had excellent outings.”
Bochy indicated that the exact dates for deGrom and Scherzer’s returns are still being finalized, with deGrom potentially making his comeback on Friday during the second game of a series in Seattle.
“We’ll have a confirmed schedule in a few days,” Bochy added.
For deGrom, this would be his first major league appearance since April 28, 2023, when he exited his sixth start with the Rangers due to an elbow injury that required surgery. On Saturday, he threw 49 pitches for Double-A Frisco, focusing primarily on off-speed pitches.
“I’m really excited to be back out there,” deGrom said. “It’s the next step—playing in big league games against big league hitters.”
Scherzer, who has been sidelined by right shoulder fatigue and a nerve issue, threw 59 pitches for Triple-A Round Rock in Las Vegas on Saturday. He pitched four scoreless innings and struck out eight of the 14 batters he faced.
The 40-year-old’s last major league appearance was on July 30. He currently has a 2-4 record with 39 1/3 innings pitched over eight starts and a 3.89 ERA.
