In the first two weeks of the season, several star players have sustained injuries, affecting teams across the league. Notable players like Puka Nacua, A.J. Brown, and Christian McCaffrey have all been sidelined, prompting their teams to devise strategies to manage their absence.
The Buffalo Bills have also experienced a significant setback with the injury of linebacker Terrel Bernard. Bernard suffered a pec injury early in their Week 2 game against the Miami Dolphins, which will keep him out for an extended period. Fortunately for the Bills, it appears Bernard won’t miss the entire season. They are already dealing with the loss of Matt Milano, who is out for most or possibly all of 2024 due to a torn bicep. With injuries piling up, the Bills can’t afford any more major setbacks.
Given the early stage of the season, the Bills need to address their linebacker situation urgently, and they have potential candidates to consider.
The Bleacher Report (BR) NFL Scouting Department recently released an article highlighting each NFL team’s most pressing need before Week 3. Although the linebacker position wasn’t identified as the top priority, it did rank within the top five needs for several teams. Specifically, the Bills were advised to consider signing linebacker Deion Jones due to their current shortage at the position.
“The Bills had veteran linebacker Deion Jones come in during training camp before ultimately cutting him. Hopefully they saved his number because the linebacker position continues to get thinner in Buffalo. Matt Milano might be gone for the season, and Terrel Bernard is expected to be out for a month after suffering a pec strain against the Dolphins.”
When the Bills cut Deion Jones during the preseason, it was quite unexpected that he didn’t even make it through the initial round of roster decisions. This move sparked speculation about whether Buffalo local Joe Andreessen would secure a spot on the team.
Although Jones has declined from his peak performance with the Atlanta Falcons, he still offers valuable veteran leadership and could quickly adapt to Sean McDermott’s defensive schemes. Despite not outshining Andreessen, the Bills cannot afford to be selective. Re-signing Jones would be a logical step to bolster their depth at linebacker.
