Chris Sale was left off of the Wild Card round roster with a back injury.
As the Atlanta Braves gear up for their Wild Card series against the San Diego Padres, Chris Sale’s health remains a major focus. He was unexpectedly scratched from Monday’s crucial Game 2 of the doubleheader and is not included on the Wild Card roster due to ongoing back issues.
Before Game 1 against the Padres on Tuesday, Braves manager Brian Snitker shared an update on Sale’s condition, stating that he spoke with Sale that morning. According to Snitker, Sale is feeling “a lot better,” and the team is hopeful he can be ready for the National League Division Series if they advance.
Chris Sale’s incredible 2024 season
Sale expressed disappointment about not being on the Wild Card roster but understands the decision was made based on his injury status. He hasn’t pitched since September 19, when he showed concerning velocity drops during his outing. This season, his fastball averaged 94.9 mph, reaching 95.5 mph in the early innings of that game, but dropped to around 90 mph later on.
Despite Snitker’s optimistic update, there are lingering concerns about Sale’s ability to return and his effectiveness if he does. When the Braves traded for Sale from the Boston Red Sox, expectations were tempered due to his injury history at age 35, with many believing his best years were behind him.
