Major breaking: One of the rivalry divisional top-star decommits as Florida pushes for in-state prospect

Florida is making a strong push for Kaylib Singleton, a cornerback from Oakleaf High School in Orange Park, Florida, following his decommitment from Rutgers. The 6-foot-1, 173-pound player announced his decision to reopen his recruitment on Sunday night.

“I’m truly thankful for the hospitality Rutgers has shown me since my commitment, and I appreciate the coaching staff for giving me the opportunity to play for their school,” Singleton stated. “I am decommitting and have decided to reopen my recruitment.”

Singleton initially committed to Rutgers in mid-June after an official visit, but the Gators have intensified their efforts lately. He attended Florida’s game against Kentucky this past Saturday, putting the Gators in a strong position to sign him.

Ranked as the No. 82 player in Florida and the No. 60 cornerback nationally by 247Sports, Singleton’s ranking is higher than the 247Sports Composite, which places him as the No. 101 player in Florida and the No. 67 cornerback.

Playing just 55 miles from Florida’s campus, Singleton has received considerable attention from the Gators’ coaching staff over the past month after a quieter summer. He interacts regularly with secondary coach Will Harris and assistant defensive backs coach Beyah Rasool.

“Things have been smooth,” Singleton shared with 247Sports last week. “I like their personalities and coaching style. I connect with them on a personal level, and I feel like they’re great coaches. I enjoy being around them, which is why I keep visiting. They have good energy.”

Florida offered Singleton in May 2023, and he visited officially in May, ultimately committing to Rutgers after his June visit. However, the Gators left a lasting impression during that visit.

“I liked the relationships I built with the players,” Singleton recalled. “I went to their dorms, and we talked. I appreciate the school, and the football program stands out to me. Getting to know the coaches, especially the new coach Beyah Rasool, helped me build a good rapport with them. He was really engaging and took us around.”

This season, Singleton has recorded 39 tackles, including 24 solo tackles, along with eight pass breakups over seven games.
