Breaking: Yankees confirm Replacement Top Suitor for $147 Million Trade Target for Anthony Rizzo injury

If the New York Yankees re-sign Juan Soto, it raises questions about their strategy in MLB free agency. A major commitment to Soto would likely lead them to seek additional talent to build a competitive team around him.

One area that needs attention is first base. While the Yankees could exercise their $17 million club option to retain Anthony Rizzo, his injury struggles and declining performance might prompt them to look for a replacement.

This is where Pete Alonso of the New York Mets comes into play. Kerry Miller from Bleacher Report recently listed the Yankees as the fifth most likely destination for the slugger. He noted that Rizzo’s poor start and subsequent injury left the Yankees in a precarious situation at first base. If they don’t pick up Rizzo’s option for 2025, finding a solid first baseman becomes a priority.

Miller speculated that the Yankees’ willingness to pursue Alonso could depend on whether they manage to re-sign Soto. He also raised the possibility of the Yankees letting Gerrit Cole walk, questioning whether they’d prefer to invest in the aging pitcher or the younger Alonso for a similar financial commitment.

New York Yankees, New York Mets, Pete Alonso

After the Mets’ loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series, Alonso might have played his final game for the team. While a return to the Mets is possible, it would require negotiating a new deal.

Alonso expressed his affection for the Mets and their fan base, emphasizing his emotional connection to the team. However, if he enjoyed playing in New York, a move to the Bronx to join the Yankees could be appealing.

Signing Alonso, who Spotrac values at around $174 million over six years, would pose a challenge for the Yankees if they also re-signed Soto. Nonetheless, adding the 29-year-old would significantly bolster their lineup. With Aaron Judge, Soto, Giancarlo Stanton, and Alonso, the Yankees would feature four of the most powerful hitters in MLB.

Alonso has consistently showcased his power, hitting at least 34 home runs in every season except for the COVID-shortened year, with three of those seasons exceeding 40 home runs.
