The Green Bay Packers have added linebacker Jamin Davis to their practice squad. He was released by the Commanders last week; the team had drafted him in 2021, and he also played as a defensive end.
Davis will train alongside athletic linebackers such as Quay Walker and Edgerrin Cooper, while adapting to a new defensive scheme under position coach Anthony Campanile and defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.
He played college football for the Kentucky Wildcats, where he took on the defensive end position in 2024 before being released mid-season.
Davis is an exciting athlete with impressive mobility and great length, making him a valuable asset in coverage right away. He effectively disrupts throwing lanes in zone coverage and makes plays, and he can also turn and run effectively in man coverage. Additionally, he has a strong ability to read and react in the run game.
He is a fourth-year veteran with 282 tackles and seven sacks over 50 games. Linebacker Davis started 36 games during his first three seasons but was released after five games this season.
He has played nearly 2,300 defensive snaps but has limited special teams experience, logging only 49 snaps. Between 2022 and 2023, he recorded 82 stops and generated 21 pressures as a blitzer, while missing just 13 tackles.
Though he is slightly undersized at 234 pounds, Davis achieved impressive athletic metrics, including a 42-inch vertical leap, an 11-foot broad jump, a 4.47-second 40-yard dash, and a 1.53-second 10-yard split. His Relative Athletic Score of 9.93 out of 10 ranks him among the most athletic linebackers ever, contributing to his rise on draft boards.
What the Green Bay Packers acquired is a speedy linebacker who excels in coverage and tackling. This player is likely to make a significant impact with the team. The Packers have strengthened their linebacker group, potentially positioning themselves for a top-five defense in the NFL.
Taking a chance on Davis is a smart move for Green Bay; there’s no such thing as having too many agile and athletic linebackers. It will be interesting to see how the coaching staff can maximize the potential of this new addition.
