Stop us if you’ve heard this before, but the Cowboys’ ground game in 2024 is severely lacking. They currently rank last in the NFL for both rushing yards (519) and yards per carry (3.4). Although they aren’t dead last in rushing touchdowns—with three so far—they’re close, sitting at 31st in that category.
This outcome was largely foreseeable. The Cowboys let last season’s leading rusher, Tony Pollard, walk in free agency and brought back an aging Ezekiel Elliott on a minimum contract. They also had the chance to draft a running back in April but passed on addressing their clear need at the position.
If it seems like this issue has come up repeatedly this season, that’s because it has.
The NFL trade deadline is fast approaching on Tuesday, leaving the Cowboys with very limited time to address their struggling running game and prove they’re still committed to winning during this turbulent 2024 season.
