The Kansas City Chiefs could potentially reunite with S Mike Edwards after the veteran defender was released by the Buffalo Bills.
However, the Chiefs have more options than just the trade market. As the season progresses, teams are releasing veteran players who no longer fit into their plans, and Kansas City could look to sign a free agent rather than part with draft picks for a trade.
If the Chiefs are seeking to add another player, a perfect opportunity just became available.
On Tuesday, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that the Buffalo Bills will be releasing veteran safety Mike Edwards. According to Pelissero, the former 2019 third-round pick requested his release, and the Bills will honor his request unless they manage to trade him by the deadline.
After starting his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, safety Mike Edwards signed a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs before the 2023 season. He made an immediate impact, recording 39 solo tackles, seven defended passes, and two interceptions, all while playing a key role in the Chiefs’ latest Super Bowl victory without missing a single postseason game.
Edwards’ strong 2023 performance earned him another one-year deal, this time with the Buffalo Bills during the offseason. However, his role in Buffalo has been minimal. He only appeared in three of the team’s first nine games, logging just seven defensive snaps and 13 special teams snaps, leaving him largely sidelined.
Despite the Bills’ strong season, it’s clear Edwards is seeking a more prominent role. While the Chiefs’ defense is already stacked, Edwards could find opportunities in their secondary, especially with Nazeeh Johnson still in concussion protocol and Jaylen Watson likely out for the rest of the season with a fractured ankle.
Given that 2023 was one of his best seasons in the NFL, it wouldn’t be surprising if Edwards is open to a reunion with the Chiefs. Not only could this offer him more playing time, but it also provides the best chance at earning his third Super Bowl ring.
