Blocked Cairo Santos 46-yard field goal extend’s Chicago’s losing streak to four straight and the losing streak to Green Bay to 11.
The dull thud of a football meeting a hand told a grim tale for the Bears.
After a tumultuous week marked by the firing of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and three consecutive losses, the team had hoped to turn the page. But as Cairo Santos lined up for a potential game-winning 46-yard field goal on Sunday, Karl Brooks broke through the center, deflecting the kick and sending the ball skidding into the end zone. The blocked attempt sealed a crushing 20-19 loss, marking the Bears’ 11th consecutive defeat to the Green Bay Packers—a record in the rivalry’s history.
“We should have closed it out with a walk-off field goal at the end, but it didn’t happen,” lamented head coach Matt Eberflus. “We need to evaluate the (field goal) operation there at the finish.
“It takes real strength and courage, as I told the players. Tough times don’t last, but tough people do. That’s where we are now—we just have to get back to work.”
Eberflus’ words couldn’t conceal the sting of disappointment, especially after Caleb Williams orchestrated a late-game drive into field goal range with three critical completions—two to Rome Odunze and one to Keenan Allen. Williams finished the game with an impressive 23-of-31 for 231 yards, but his effort ultimately fell short in what proved to be one of the most competitive and captivating matchups in the recent history of this storied series.
The Bears’ offense showed signs of life under new coordinator Thomas Brown, offering hope for the future. However, the improvement wasn’t enough to elevate them beyond their current 4-6 record.
“Being able to do that today, I think, builds confidence for us,” quarterback Caleb Williams said. “Having those bright moments.”
The brightest moment came during the final drive, but it ultimately fell short. The opportunity arose after cornerback Jaylon Johnson stumbled, allowing a 61-yard completion to Christian Watson. The Packers capitalized, with Jordan Love scoring on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 2:59 remaining. Although their two-point conversion attempt failed, it left the Bears within reach of victory with a potential game-winning field goal.
