The New York Yankees are in need of a first baseman, and one analyst predicts they will address this need through a trade.
After declining Anthony Rizzo’s option and making him a free agent, MLB insider Chris Kirschner of *The Athletic* speculated that the Yankees might trade Marcus Stroman to the Washington Nationals in exchange for Juan Yepez to fill the gap at first base.
“The Nationals are looking to bolster their starting pitching depth,” Kirschner wrote. “A trade involving Stroman, $6 million, and infielder Jorbit Vivas heading to Washington in exchange for Yepez could be a viable option. Yepez, who has experience at both corner infield and outfield positions, could serve as a solid bench addition for the Yankees.”
The Washington Nationals are aiming to strengthen their first base position this offseason, and Juan Yepez might find himself on the trading block. If the proposed trade goes through, the Yankees would save $8.5 million while acquiring Yepez, a pre-arbitration player. This move would free up $16.6 million for New York to address other roster needs.
The trade appears logical for both sides, as Washington gains a starting pitcher in Marcus Stroman and a versatile infielder in Jorbit Vivas. Meanwhile, the Yankees secure a 26-year-old player who could serve as a platoon option or provide stability at first base if they opt not to pursue additional signings.
