Patrick Mahomes was fined for celebrating a touchdown pass in Week 11.
The Buffalo Bills defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 30-21 in Week 11, handing the defending champions their first loss of the 2024 season. While the loss ended the Chiefs’ bid for an undefeated record, Patrick Mahomes faced an additional setback: a fine of $14,069 from the NFL.
The fine was reportedly issued for a “violent gesture” Mahomes made after throwing a touchdown pass to Noah Gray in the fourth quarter. The gesture, however, was simply a six-finger point in Gray’s direction after the reception.
Many fans expressed surprise and frustration over the fine, arguing that Mahomes’ celebratory gesture didn’t warrant punishment. Fines for player behavior have become a common occurrence in the NFL, but this one stood out due to its perceived mild nature.
Mahomes has had past run-ins with fines, including a $50,000 penalty in December 2023 for criticizing officials after a loss to the Bills, with Chiefs head coach Andy Reid also being fined on the same day for a similar infraction.
Despite the fine, Mahomes’ financial situation remains secure, with his $40 million annual salary from his 10-year contract extension signed in 2020. The fine is seen by many as a mere formality. After their first loss of the season, the Chiefs will head to Charlotte in Week 12 to face the Carolina Panthers, looking to bounce back and secure a top seed in the AFC.
