The Atlanta Braves’ main focus this offseason is reportedly re-signing their longtime pitcher, Max Fried. Fried, who has spent the last eight years with the team, may be nearing the end of his tenure. The southpaw ace is expected to secure a six-year, $136 million deal, according to Spotrac, although his contract could exceed that amount.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently predicted that Fried could leave the Braves, signing a six-year, $174 million deal with the Boston Red Sox this winter. “The Red Sox have been aggressive this offseason, and I would be surprised if they don’t land one of the top free-agent pitchers,” Bowden wrote.
“Although I think Fried will return to the Braves, I could see the Red Sox offering the highest bid and signing him.” Fried is known for his strong performance in big games, and his 58 percent ground-ball rate could be effective at Fenway Park. Last season, he posted a 3.25 ERA in 29 starts (174 1/3 innings) and earned 3.5 WAR. Over his eight-year career, he has maintained a 3.07 ERA.
The Red Sox have long been considered one of the top contenders to sign Max Fried. Fried was high school teammates with Boston pitcher Lucas Giolito, so it’s likely the two have discussed the possibility of playing together again.
Boston is also expected to be very active in free agency this offseason, as they have been falling behind in the competitive American League East in recent years. With reports of a $600 million-plus offer for Juan Soto, committing $174 million to Fried would not be a major hurdle for the Red Sox.
