Texas Tech has a strong tradition of developing top wide receivers, and now the Red Raiders are gaining a reputation as a sought-after destination for skilled transfer pass catchers.
The latest standout to join Tech is Reggie Virgil, a transfer from Miami (Ohio), who committed to the Red Raiders on Friday night. This is a significant addition for head coach Joey McGuire and new offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich.
Virgil, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound receiver from Florida, will have one year of eligibility left. In 2024, he recorded 41 receptions for 816 yards and nine touchdowns. His 19.9 yards per catch led the Mid-American Conference.
Virgil’s performance this fall marked a breakout after catching just one pass in each of the previous two seasons. This year, he recorded a reception in all 13 games for the RedHawks, including a season-high six catches against Bowling Green. He also had a standout performance with 113 yards and two touchdowns on only three catches against Eastern Michigan.
Ranked as a 4-star transfer by 247Sports.com, Virgil had planned a visit to Oklahoma after his trip to Lubbock, but he canceled it after deciding to commit to the Red Raiders. Currently ranked as the No. 16 wide receiver in the transfer portal, his signing is a major win for Texas Tech, which was in need of a proven veteran wideout.
Virgil’s arrival will help fill the gap left by Josh Kelly, who was Tech’s leading receiver in 2024. Kelly, a transfer from Washington State, had an impressive season, catching 89 passes for 1,023 yards and five touchdowns while playing in the slot.
At the time of this post, Texas Tech boasts the best transfer class in the country according to 247Sports.com. With five players already committed to the 2025 class, the Red Raiders are off to a strong start in addressing key needs as they aim to compete for a Big 12 championship next season under head coach Joey McGuire.
