Reds’ targeting former All-Star as Tyler Stephenson’s backup

While many fans are hoping the Cincinnati Reds will add an outfielder during this week’s MLB Winter Meetings, addressing the backup catcher position might be a more immediate need. With Tyler Stephenson being the only catcher on the Reds’ 40-man roster and no reliable backup in the minor leagues, the team may be seeking outside help.

According to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com, the Reds are reportedly interested in signing free agent catcher James McCann. The former All-Star has spent the past two seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, serving as a backup to their emerging star, Adley Rutschman.

James McCann brings 11 years of Major League experience and could provide a veteran presence behind the plate for the Cincinnati Reds. Reds’ President of Baseball Operations, Nick Krall, has expressed interest in upgrading the backup catcher position, ideally finding someone who could step in as a starter if needed. McCann played regularly for the New York Mets in 2021, but that was the last time he surpassed 100 games in a season.

Earlier this offseason, the Reds parted ways with Luke Maile after declining his 2025 club option. While Maile struggled offensively, his leadership and rapport with the pitching staff were invaluable. If the Reds miss out on McCann, there’s a chance they could bring Maile back on a more affordable deal.

If McCann is unavailable, other free-agent options are on the table. Former Reds farmhand Yasmani Grandal, along with former All-Star Elias Diaz and two-time Gold Glove winner Tucker Barnhart, are still on the market.

The Reds are determined to avoid a repeat of the 2022 season, when Tyler Stephenson played just 50 games, and six other catchers filled in behind the plate. While Alex Jackson is on a minor-league deal, adding a veteran like McCann is a crucial move for the team this offseason.
