Tests conducted on Monday confirmed that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a mild high ankle sprain during Sunday’s victory over the Cleveland Browns, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, citing sources.
The evaluation confirmed the initial diagnosis, and Mahomes is still considered week-to-week as the Chiefs face quick turnarounds in Weeks 16 and 17.
The Chiefs (13-1) are set to host the Houston Texans on Saturday, December 21, and then travel to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers on Christmas Day, December 25.
While Patrick Mahomes’ status for Saturday’s game against the Texans is uncertain, a source told Ian Rapoport that the reigning Super Bowl MVP is expected to “be fine long-term.”
Mahomes sustained the injury in the second half of Sunday’s win after being hit high and low by multiple Browns defenders just as he released an incomplete pass.
Veteran backup Carson Wentz finished the game after Mahomes’ injury and is expected to start if Mahomes’ ankle prevents him from playing in Week 16.
