Signed Deal: Cincinnati Reds Get All-star Catcher In Blockbuster Trade With New York Yankees

The Reds have traded for catcher Jose Trevino from the New York Yankees.

According to Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Cincinnati will send pitcher Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson to New York in exchange. Both teams later confirmed the trade.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Reds were looking for a catcher to support their younger pitching staff, and “Trevino fits the bill.” The 32-year-old has spent the last three seasons with the Yankees after beginning his career with the Texas Rangers.

Though not known for his hitting, Trevino earned All-Star honors in 2022 and was recognized for his exceptional defense, winning the Fielding Bible Award, Gold Glove Award, and Platinum Glove Award. In 2023, he faced a setback due to a torn ligament in his right wrist, which required season-ending surgery. By 2024, his playing time diminished as the Yankees gave more opportunities to rookie catcher Austin Wells.

In the trade, the Reds are sending reliever Fernando Cruz, who posted 95 strikeouts and a 4.86 ERA across 69 appearances, including three starts, during the 2024 season. Also heading to New York is 28-year-old catcher Alex Jackson, who joined the Reds on a minor league deal last November after spending the previous season in the Rays organization.

The Reds have been active this offseason, making several notable moves. They traded former NL Rookie of the Year Jonathan India for pitcher Brady Singer and made what is arguably their biggest move by hiring legendary coach Terry Francona.
