Breaking: Yankees Clear Path to Trade for $260 Million Star With Latest Move

The New York Yankees are continuing to reshape their roster, which was built for the World Series last season.

Their latest move involved signing first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, the 2022 National League MVP with the St. Louis Cardinals, to a $12.5 million contract. While the addition of the 37-year-old, seven-time All-Star is notable, it also potentially paves the way for the Yankees to acquire another key infielder at a position of need.

Nolan Arenado gestures

Nolan Arenado, the star third baseman who spent the past four years alongside Goldschmidt in St. Louis, is one of the top players likely available in trades this offseason. The Yankees have already shown interest in Arenado, and MLB.com reported that Goldschmidt’s presence in New York could play a significant role in convincing Arenado to waive his no-trade clause if the Yankees pursue a trade with St. Louis.

According to sources, the Yankees had approached the Cardinals earlier in the offseason about a trade for Arenado, but St. Louis rejected the idea due to their lack of interest in taking on the contract of veteran right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman.

Arenado, 33, still has three years remaining on his eight-year, $260 million deal.
