Major Acquisition: Virginia Tech Lands Another Dream Deal, Welcome’s Home Another Talent

It’s been an eventful week for the Virginia Tech Hokies. The week began on Monday when three players revealed their plans to transfer to Virginia Tech. This was followed by two more commitments, and on Friday, the Hokies made a significant addition with the arrival of an experienced and talented wide receiver. Donavon Greene, a wide receiver from Wake Forest, shared on Instagram that he would be heading to Blacksburg.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Donavon Greene was a highly regarded four-star prospect from Mount Airy High School in Mount Airy, North Carolina, when he signed with Wake Forest in 2019. At the time, he was one of the highest-ranked players to ever commit to the program. After redshirting his first year, Greene started all eight games in 2020, recording 29 catches for 582 yards (20.1 yards per reception) and two touchdowns.

However, injuries have been a significant challenge for Greene, causing him to miss both the 2021 and 2023 seasons. In 2022, he bounced back with 37 receptions, 642 yards (17.4 yards per reception), and six touchdowns. In 2024, Greene caught 23 passes for 380 yards (16.5 yards per reception) and three touchdowns.

When healthy, Greene has shown tremendous potential with his combination of size and speed. He is expected to slot into Virginia Tech’s starting lineup in 2025, especially with the Hokies losing key receivers like Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton, Ali Jennings, and Stephen Gosnell to the NFL draft. Additionally, Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw and Chance Fitzgerald have transferred. Fortunately, the Hokies have several young players stepping up, including rising junior Ayden Green and freshmen Brodie Adams and Chanz Wiggins. They also signed top recruit Snook Peterkin, who could make an impact in 2025.

Greene’s addition provides valuable experience to the wide receiver room, and if he can stay healthy, he could have a standout year. The Hokies also signed top Virginia talent Cameron Seldon, who is expected to play wide receiver but has the versatility to line up in the backfield as well.

Greene, who played high school football alongside current Hokies RB Tyler Mason and DE Deric Dandy, hails from just an hour and a half away from Blacksburg. He is the 17th transfer portal addition for Virginia Tech and the sixth this week.

Welcome home, Donavon.
