Amid uncertainty regarding the status of Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice for the 2024 season, the team could benefit from bolstering its receiver depth. According to John Dillon of Chiefs Wire, one of the most favorable options for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions would be to re-sign wideout Byron Pringle.
Dillon highlighted Pringle’s familiarity with Andy Reid’s offensive system and his track record as a reliable target for Patrick Mahomes during his tenure with the Chiefs in 2021. Originally an undrafted free agent from Kansas State, Pringle stands out as a probable candidate for a reunion with the team.
While Pringle initially served primarily as a special teams player during his first two NFL seasons with the Chiefs, he saw increased involvement in the offense in 2021 and capitalized on the opportunity. In 17 regular-season games, Pringle amassed 42 receptions for 568 yards and 5 touchdowns on 60 targets, showcasing his effectiveness in Reid’s system despite playing roughly half of the team’s offensive snaps.
During the 2021 playoffs, Pringle continued to contribute, tallying 12 receptions for 82 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a notable performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card Round.
In 2022, Pringle ventured into free agency for the first time and signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Chicago Bears. However, injuries and the challenges of playing in a struggling offense limited his production to a 10-135-2 stat line in 11 games.
In 2023, Pringle reunited with former Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, signing a one-year, $1 million deal with the Washington Commanders. Despite appearing in all 17 regular-season games, his contributions were modest, recording a 14-161 stat line while playing only 17% of the team’s offensive snaps.
