Breaking: Red Sox Reportedly Sign Versatile Slugger To Bolster Infield Depth

The Boston Red Sox have been a frequent topic of trade rumors this winter. However, since signing Walker Buehler to a one-year, $21.05 million deal a month ago, they’ve remained relatively quiet.

While fans are eagerly awaiting a major move, possibly for Alex Bregman, the team has instead focused on adding depth pieces.

According to Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase, the Red Sox have signed infielder Abraham Toro to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training.

Toro played 94 games for the Oakland Athletics in 2024, posting a .240/.293/.350 slash line, with six home runs and 26 RBIs, and an OPS of .643 (87 OPS+). His defensive versatility—playing first base, second base, third base, and left field—could have caught the attention of the Red Sox front office.

The team currently lacks a regular second baseman, with options like Vaughn Grissom, Ceddanne Rafaela, Romy Gonzalez, and David Hamilton potentially platooning there.

While the Red Sox have prioritized depth and versatility in recent years, the lack of a clear second baseman leaves fans wondering if the team will pursue Bregman, a former All-Star who could provide a right-handed bat.

Though the signing of Toro doesn’t necessarily rule out the pursuit of Bregman, with reports suggesting the team’s interest in him is waning, Toro could be the final addition to the Red Sox’s infield before Opening Day.
