Report: Pete Alonso ‘Aired His Frustration’ To Mets Before Agreeing to $54 Million Deal

The prolonged contract negotiations between Pete Alonso and the New York Mets are reportedly over. The first baseman has agreed to a two-year, $54 million deal, which includes a $10 million signing bonus and a player option for after the 2025 season.

With the upcoming season fast approaching, Alonso needed a team, and the Mets have always seemed like the most logical fit for him. However, the drawn-out talks may have impacted the long-term relationship between the star player and the team. According to Mike Puma from the New York Post, a key meeting helped finalize the deal.

“Steve Cohen flew to Tampa on Tuesday and met with Pete Alonso and Scott Boras (with David Stearns also present) at Stovall House, a social club, to help close the deal,” Puma shared on X (formerly Twitter). “Alonso expressed his frustration with the situation. It was made clear to him that the Mets want him.”

Puma further explained that Alonso’s frustrations stemmed from not receiving an offer he felt he deserved from the Mets. Since debuting in 2019, Alonso has been one of baseball’s top power hitters, ranking second in home runs with 226, only behind Aaron Judge’s 232. He’s also third on the Mets’ all-time home run list, trailing Darryl Strawberry, who holds the record with 252. With his return to Queens, Alonso could soon be eyeing that record in 2025.
