Landon Duckworth, the quarterback from Jackson, Alabama, was once a committed recruit for the South Carolina Gamecocks. He de-committed in June of the previous year, and since then, significant changes have taken place within the Gamecocks’ football program. Head coach Shane Beamer signed a contract extension, and quarterback LaNorris Sellers demonstrated his potential. Now, Duckworth is nearing the final stage of his recruitment.
We caught up with Duckworth at the Under Armour Next series in Atlanta to get an update on his relationship with the Gamecocks.
Duckworth on the changes since his de-commitment:
“Coach Loggains left, but Coach Beamer is still there, so everything’s good. I have a solid relationship with him, and I’ve had a long-standing connection with Coach Shula as well. He visited my school a few times, and we had dinner in Mobile where he met my mom and me.”
On what he expects from the offense under Mike Shula:
“It really depends. He coached Cam Newton for a long time, and his dad was a great coach too. They definitely count on him.”
On the message from the South Carolina coaching staff:
“We talk a lot, especially Coach Shula and Coach Beamer. I communicate with the whole staff, and even the new hires have been consistent with their message—they just really want me. They tell me that all the time.”
On other schools prioritizing him:
“Florida State, Missouri, and North Carolina are in the mix. I like Missouri too.”
