The Baltimore Orioles have a chance to acquire Dylan Cease from the San Diego Padres without giving up their best prospects.
The Baltimore Orioles traded several of their top prospects to acquire Corbin Burnes from the Milwaukee Brewers last offseason. Burnes had an impressive season with Baltimore but left in free agency to sign a lucrative contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Despite efforts to extend his contract, the Orioles couldn’t retain him and lost a few of their top 10 prospects in the process.
Fast forward a year, and the Orioles may find themselves in a similar position, needing to make a significant trade for an expiring player like Dylan Cease if they want to compete in the 2025 season. A trade with the San Diego Padres for Cease would be costly, but the Orioles are unlikely to part with their top prospects like Coby Mayo and Samuel Basallo. To make this trade work, they would have to get creative with the prospects they offer.
