Bills Update: Josh Allen’s No. 1 RB Turns Heads With New Contract Demand

James Cook indicates he wants extension with significant raise

Although the Buffalo Bills didn’t make it to the Super Bowl this season, with quarterback Josh Allen leading the team, there’s no doubt they have the potential to make a deep playoff run next year. A key player in their offense this season was James Cook, the team’s top running back, who had a breakout year.

“He played with incredible intensity all season,” Allen said when discussing Cook’s performance in the AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs. “The way he ran the ball, he was aggressive. That crucial fourth-down play last night… it was a remarkable play by a special player.

He’s improved every year he’s been in the league, and we’re excited to see him continue that progress next season.”

James Cook wrapped up the regular season with 207 carries for 1,009 yards, ranking alongside Baltimore Ravens’ Derrick Henry with 16 rushing touchdowns, the most in the league. Cook also posted 32 receptions for 258 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Despite still having one year remaining on his rookie contract as a second-round pick from the 2022 NFL draft, Cook is seeking a pay increase.

He’s aiming for $15 million annually. During an Instagram Live session on Tuesday, Cook pinned a message indicating his desired salary: “$15 mill year.” To make sure there was no misunderstanding, he reinforced his stance on Wednesday by reposting a fan’s message on X, which read, “if you think James Cook ain’t worth 15, you must’ve been dropped head first through the table. Pay him.” Cook added his own comment as well.

Earning $15 million would make Cook the second-highest paid running back in the league behind San Francisco 49ers star Christian McCaffrey, whose average salary is $16 million. He’d be on par with New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara, who rakes in $15 million a year.

At that rate, Cook, 25, would make more than Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley, the 2024 Offensive Player of the Year, who makes $12.6 million annually. Whether or not the Bills can afford to pay him that much remains to be seen. However, it appears the Georgia alum is ready to put some pressure on the front office to make it happen.
