The Virginia Tech Hokies are reportedly close to hiring an offensive coordinator, with Christian Taylor, a Buffalo Bills assistant, emerging as the target for the position. According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic and FOX Sports, Taylor is the frontrunner for the role.
Who is Christian Taylor? The 41-year-old coach spent last season as a defensive quality control coach with the Bills. Prior to that, from 2020 to 2023, Taylor served as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach at William & Mary, where he gained recognition for leading innovative offenses. In 2023, he was honored as the AFCA FCS Assistant Coach of the Year.
Taylor’s connection to the Bills comes through several William & Mary alumni on the staff, including head coach Sean McDermott and offensive coordinator Joe Brady. Notably, Taylor also played quarterback for the Tribe during his college years.
The Virginia Tech Hokies were caught off guard when offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen left for Ohio State last week to take on the role of offensive line coach. With Bowen’s departure, head coach Brent Pry found himself in a challenging position, needing to find a new offensive coordinator late in the hiring cycle.
Reports surfaced suggesting that the Hokies were interested in former West Virginia head coach Neal Brown, especially after his firing, but Brown decided to pass on multiple job offers this cycle, likely due to the money still owed to him by West Virginia.
Bowen’s exit came shortly after Virginia Tech hired Sam Siefkes as the new defensive coordinator, replacing Chris Marve, who was let go six weeks earlier. Siefkes, who previously worked as the Arizona Cardinals linebackers coach, also has college coaching experience, having been a successful defensive coordinator at Wofford. Like Taylor, Siefkes brings both NFL and college coaching experience to the Hokies’ staff.
