The Yankees Surprising Trade for a $15-million Third Baseman

With Alex Bregman securing a three-year deal with the Boston Red Sox late Wednesday, the third-base market is expected to loosen. This creates an opportunity for the New York Yankees to seek an upgrade at the position without making a long-term financial commitment.

However, don’t expect a trade for Nolan Arenado. While the Yankees might seem like a natural fit for Arenado on paper, it’s clear they have reservations. Despite reports suggesting that the St. Louis Cardinals expect talks to heat up with the Yankees following Bregman’s move to the Red Sox, it appears unlikely.

ESPN Insider Buster Olney, along with longtime Yankees reporter Jack Curry, SNY’s Andy Martino, and ESPN’s Jeff Passan, have all confirmed that the Yankees have shown no interest in Arenado.

So, where does this leave the Yankees? With Bregman off the table, other third-base options are emerging. The Arizona Diamondbacks are reportedly open to offers for third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who is owed $15 million this year and will be a free agent after the season.

Suarez would offer a defensive upgrade over DJ LeMahieu or Oswaldo Cabrera, and his offensive consistency, hitting 20 or more home runs over the last four seasons, makes him an attractive option.

A trade for Suarez could make sense for the Yankees, who could offer young pitching in exchange, while the Diamondbacks could slot in Blaze Alexander as their new third baseman.
