Mike Young gave an injury update on center Mylyjael Poteat ahead of the Hokies’ game with Louisville on Tuesday night.
During the first half of Virginia Tech’s ACC game at Miami on Saturday night, center Mylyjael Poteat was injured when a Hurricanes player accidentally tripped into his knee. Poteat stayed on the court for a few minutes before being helped to the locker room.
He returned for the second half but didn’t play, watching as his teammates scored 43 points to secure an 81-68 victory, fueled by a strong bench performance. Patrick Wessler stepped up in Poteat’s place, and sophomore Jaydon Young had a career-high 27 points.
After the game, head coach Mike Young gave a cautiously optimistic update on Poteat’s injury, noting that it would be further evaluated back in Blacksburg. On Monday, Coach Young provided another update.

Mike Young discussed Poteat’s injury status, ahead of Virginia Tech’s upcoming game against Louisville on Tuesday. “Structurally, he’s fine,” Young said. “He still has some swelling. It’s a bone bruise, which I hadn’t heard of until a few years ago. I’m not sure about his availability for tomorrow.”
Young added that they’d need to wait until game day to determine his status, but he reassured that there was no structural damage or ligament issues. “We’ll have him back soon; I hope it’s tomorrow, but I don’t expect him to be out for long,” he said.
Taking care not to rush Poteat back is a wise decision. Given how tough the Louisville game will be even with Poteat, it will be even more challenging without him. Considering the nature of the injury, this update from Coach Young is relatively reassuring.
