The New York Yankees are reportedly making a strong push to trade for third baseman Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals.
It’s uncertain whether Arenado would currently waive his no-trade clause for a move to New York, but previous reports suggested he was unwilling to do so.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller believes the Yankees will continue pursuing Arenado. He recently predicted that New York would acquire the third baseman before the 2025 MLB trade deadline.
“Arenado finishes the season with the New York Yankees,” Miller wrote. “Reports indicated he was open to waiving his no-trade clause for them, and after months of rotating Oswaldo Cabrera, DJ LeMahieu, and Oswald Peraza at third base, the Yankees might be desperate enough to take on the remainder of his contract.”
Arenado would be the ideal piece to complete the Yankees’ roster overhaul.
The main question remains whether Arenado would agree to waive his no-trade clause.
However, Arenado might reconsider if the Cardinals struggle as much as experts predict. They could end up performing on par with or worse than the Reds and Pirates. Combined with St. Louis’ apparent willingness to move him, the $260 million star could be persuaded to waive his no-trade clause for a deal with the Yankees.
If the Cardinals struggle as much as experts predict, Arenado might reconsider his stance on the no-trade clause. If they end up performing at the same level as the Reds or Pirates—or even worse—he could become more open to a move. Combine that with the Cardinals’ apparent willingness to trade him, and the Yankees could have a real shot at landing the $260 million third baseman.
Arenado would reunite with former teammate Paul Goldschmidt in the Bronx, seamlessly fitting into the Yankees’ infield as they aim for a return to the World Series.
